Baby Clothing Size Guide

Age labels are a shortcut, not a measurement. Check your baby's length, chest and weight, then compare them with the size chart on the product page.

Three useful numbers

Measure before you choose

Length

Lay baby safely on a flat surface and measure from the top of the head to the heel with the legs gently extended.

Chest

Measure around the fullest part of the chest. Keep the tape level and comfortably loose.

Weight

Use a recent reliable weight. If growth or feeding concerns exist, follow your clinician's advice rather than a clothing chart.

Approximate size guide

Label Approx. length Approx. weight Good to know
Newborn Up to 56 cm Up to 4.5 kg Buy lightly until the fit is known.
0–3 months 56–62 cm 4–6 kg Useful first size for many babies.
3–6 months 62–68 cm 6–8 kg Allow room for movement and diapers.
6–9 months 68–74 cm 8–9.5 kg Check torso length on bodysuits.
9–12 months 74–80 cm 9–11 kg Prioritise flexible knees and waist.
12–18 months 80–86 cm 10–12.5 kg Easy dressing helps active toddlers.

Brand charts win. These ranges are a shopping reference. If a product page gives its own measurements, use those first.

A correct fit should let your baby move freely

Looks right

  • Neckline lies flat without pressing
  • Shoulders sit close to the shoulder line
  • Two-finger comfort at waist and openings
  • Snaps close without pulling
  • Baby can kick, curl and reach freely

Size up if

  • Fabric pulls across the torso or diaper
  • Red marks appear at cuffs or openings
  • Toes press into a closed sleepsuit
  • Snaps pop open during normal movement
  • Your baby is between measurements

Plan layers, not rigid outfits

Warm weather

Light and breathable

Use soft, breathable pieces and check the baby's chest or back for overheating rather than relying on hands and feet.

Air-conditioned rooms

One removable layer

Keep a light layer nearby so it can be removed quickly when the room changes.

Cooler days

Flexible combinations

Choose layers that do not restrict movement. Remove hats and outdoor layers indoors as appropriate.

Fabric and washing choices

Cotton

Breathable and familiar. Check weave, softness and shrinkage instructions.

Stretch blends

Helpful for movement and easier dressing. Follow the care label to protect elasticity.

Decorated pieces

Inspect buttons, beads, ties and rough seams. Keep loose or damaged parts away from babies.
